On New Year's Eve, 2016, I had the honor of being part of my good friend's surprise proposal in Cental Park, NYC. Here is their love story as well as highlights from their special day!
It all started in October 2014 on my first trip to New York City. I truly feel it was God's purpose for me to go because I met him at the church that I went to visit with my family. He was playing drums at the church service. I noticed him the moment I walked in but we never talked & I didnt even know his name. Whenever I went to the church I saw him and wanted to at least greet him but I was too nervous to approach him. One day a bunch of friends from church & I decided to go to a restaurant. He was actually coming along as well so I decided that would be the perfect time to break the ice. Unfortunately he ended up leaving early. I felt like I had lost any chance of speaking to him because I was set to go back home to Colombia very soon. Shortly after I returned home to Colombia, a family member of his who I had met in New York came to visit my country. We met up & I realized that they could help me find him on Facebook. I found him by photo and we became friends. We started our friendship online & began talking every day. We literally would chat all day. Fast forward to January 2015 we finally expressed our mutual feelings for each other and we started what for many it was a relationship without a future. For many it seemed like madness, a whim, something temporary, but everyday for us became stronger and stronger. I had moments where I doubted that this would ever work but then I realized how close we were, even being over 3000 kilometers apart from each other. One day he broke the news to me that he was coming to see me in Colombia. I was completely surprised. During that visit we shared the 13 most beautiful and unforgettable days. In October of 2016 I was able to come back to New York for a long term visit. On Dec 31st he asked me to go for a walk in Central Park while a friend of his took photos for her portfolio. We walked around the 5th Avenue section & made our way to the Gapstow Bridge. We walked up onto the bridge & he got down on his knee & proposed. I couldn't & still can't believe it actually happened. We've shared so many dreams & hopes & now it finally happened. I feel happy and grateful to God for his blessings. The moment & the place where he propsed was all so beautiful. I could barely hold back my tears; I was so overwhelmed by emotion. I'm filled with joy knowing that we have a future together when things seemed so uncertain in the beginning. I'm so nervous but also happy & excited that a future blessed by God awaits us.
